This class is a survey course of world history from the Age of Enlightenment to the modern day. The purpose of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the major events, people, and forces that have shaped the course of world history. The major periods of history students will be studying this year include:
1. The Enlightenment and Power in Europe
2. The French Revolution
3. The Industrial Revolution
4. World War I
5. Between the Wars
6. World War II
7. Cold War in Europe
8. Asia since 1945
9. Latin America since 1945
10. Africa since 1945
11. Middle East since 1945
Goals:
- To learn about and develop an appreciation for the major economic ideas, trends and events that have influenced the world.
- To improve your reading, writing, speaking, listening and thinking skills.
- To learn how to be a better student by valuing your education and taking responsibility for your won successes and failures.
Class Materials:
Textbook: Holt, Reinhart, et al, World History: The Human Journey. Harcourt Education Company, 2000.
In addition, you are required to have a folder, notebook or section of a notebook dedicated to this class. You need a secure place to take notes and a secure place to keep numerous handouts.
Grading:
- Test and Projects - 35%
- Quizzes - 20%
- Class Participation - 20%
- Homework - 25%
Classroom Rules and Expectations (in addition to the Student Handbook):
- Respect yourself and others at all time.
- Arrive to class on time, prepared and ready to participate.
- All students will keep a binder or notebook for handouts and notes.
- Late homework will not be accepted.
- Any missed work is your responsibility to make-up.
