Searching the Web

Search engines: Also called "spiders" o r "crawlers," search engines constantly visit web sites on the Internet in order to create catalogs of web pages. Google is an example of a search engine.

Directories: Unlike search engines, directories are created by humans. When searching in a directory you will have to select subject categories which will lead to sub-categories, thus narrowing the search. Sites must be submitted, then they are assigned to an appropriate category or categories. Because of the human role, directories often provide better results than search engines. Google Directory and KidsClick! are examples of a directories.
