Library & Technology Links for Staff |
|
|
| The purpose behind this page is to give both new and experienced teachers a general overview of the many useful tools that the library and the library staff can offer – both in the school library media center and online. I realize how busy a classroom teacher’s day can be, but I hope you will take the time to poke around and discover how library staff can work with you to strengthen your lessons and add a research and/or technology component. Please let me know what you think, if you would like to collaborate and/or if you would like to see anything else added. For your convenience, there is an email link at the bottom of the page. And, of course, you are always welcome to pop in to the library!

Internet Public Library
The IPL is the first public library of and for the Internet community. Check out the IPL PowerPoint presentation to see examples of the rich and varied resources available at the IPL including the worldwide newspaper collection, the blogs index, special multimedia exhibits, the research and writing guide, the TeenSpace site, and much more. Find out how our reference service works with students and teachers and where to submit your own questions.

Library of Congress
The Library of Congress' National Digital Libary is an excellent source for primary source documents. Here, you can see such iconic items from the nation's past as Thomas Jefferson's rough draft of the Declaration of Independence, Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, the papers of Frederick Douglass, early baseball cards, photographs documenting the women's suffrage movement, maps from the 16th century to the present, films of Thomas Edison and sound recordings from the birth of the recording industry.
The Library's Web site is a great resource for students and teachers.

Teacher Tube
The goal of TeacherTube.com is to provide an online community for sharing instructional videos. The founders of the site sought to fill a need for a more educationally focused, safe venue for teachers, schools, and home learners. It is a site to provide anytime, anywhere professional development with teachers teaching teachers. As well, it is a site where teachers can post videos designed for students to view in order to learn a concept or skill.
Blogger
A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is "blogging" and someone who keeps a blog is a "blogger." Blogs are typically updated daily using software that allows people with little or no technical background to update and maintain the blog. Blogger.com provides FREE space on the web for blogging!

Webquests
According to Dr. Bernie Dodge, "A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented activity in which most or all of the information used by learners is drawn from the Web. WebQuests are designed to use learners' time well, to focus on using information rather than looking for it, and to support learners' thinking at the levels of analysis, synthesis and evaluation.
This site offers great examples of WebQuests and advice for creating your own. The Williams Library staff would welcome the opportunity to work with teachers to create WebQuests based on classroom curricula. WebQuests are ideal for introducting new topics, finishing up a unit, or for just satisfying the curiosity of those students with lots of questions.

pbwiki.com
Wikis are excellent for collaboration. If you want to let students collaborate, add files, suggest links, and create a document that's comprehensive and up-to-date, use a wiki. PBwiki is the easiest wiki to use (and it's free).
