Sports, Clubs, and Extra-Curricular Activities
Have you read the latest edition of the Devils' Advocate? It's online!
Participation in school and community activities is strongly recommended for all students; freshmen and sophomores especially should begin involvement early in their high school years.
Please see the Athletic Section for schedules.
Be sure to check all eligibility requirements. Also note that Chelsea High School will add clubs and activities according to student interest. If the club you want does not yet exist at Chelsea High, see a faculty member or administrator for information on how you might be able to start it yourself.
Eligibility Requirements
Clubs and interscholastic athletics at Chelsea High School are an extension of the high school's educational program. All programs are designed to foster the continued development of the student's abilities.
Athletic Specific Eligibility Requirements
- A student must abide by the rules of the Athletic Department regarding practice and training and abide by the specific requirements of the coach of the sport in which he or she is participating.
- To maintain athletic eligibility, a student must not be failing any course at the conclusion of each marking quarter. The final grades and athletic eligibility rules for the previous academic year determine eligibility for fall sports. Students who lose their eligibility for this reason have the right to appeal to the principal to cite extenuating circumstances that may have resulted in the failed class. Students have the right to appeal the principal's decision to the superintendent.
- For athletes who lose their eligibility, daily tutoring will be available after school through the Chelsea After School Program. Attendance at these tutoring sessions is strongly recommended.
- In order to practice or compete with a Chelsea High School team, a student must be present in school on the day of the practice or competition. For practice and competition on non-school days, the student must have been present on the last regular school day scheduled.
- If a student is tardy (unexcused) on the day of the practice or competition, or on a Friday before a weekend practice or competition, that student must serve tardy detention on that day in order to practice or compete. Disciplinary detention shall be handled in the same manner.
- No student who is suspended (including in-house suspension) or involved in a serious disciplinary infraction may represent Chelsea High School until approved by the principal.
- Each student must provide his or her coach with a permission slip signed by the student's parent/guardian approving the student's participation on the team.
- In addition to school rules, a student must meet the eligibility requirements and follow the rules of the MIAA.
In case of unusual circumstances, a meeting will be held between the principal and athletic director to determine eligibility.
Eligibility for School Clubs, Organizations, and School-Sponsored Events
Students lose their eligibility to participate if they:
- are absent on the day of an event or meeting or on a Friday before a weekend event or meeting,
- are suspended or involved in a serious disciplinary infraction,
- are tardy (unexcused) on the day of an event or meeting or on a Friday before a weekend event or meeting and fail to serve detention on that day,
- in addition, for Clubs, Student Government, fall musical productions, and Shakespeare and Company productions, students may lose their eligibility to participate if they fail any course in the previous marking period (unless approved by appeal to the principal).
Students who lose their eligibility for this reason have the right to appeal to the principal to cite extenuating circumstances that may have resulted in the failed class. Students have the right to appeal the principal's decision to the superintendent. For students who lose their eligibility, daily tutoring will be available after school through the Chelsea After School Program. Attendance at these tutoring sessions is strongly recommended.
