MBTA Student Charlie Cards
As part of an Automated Fare Collection system, the MBTA is now providing Student CharlieCards. In the past, pay-as-you-go student riders received student badges that allowed them to pay a reduced student fare. NOW, automated fare collection requires a Student CharlieCard as a form of payment.
CharlieCards are durable plastic cards with an embedded chip that stores value. They are reusable and you can add value to the card at any time at any fare vending machine at stations throughout the MBTA system. You simply tap your CharlieCard on the black target at the farebox on buses or a faregate at subway stations to board. This will allow students to receive the half-fare Monday through Friday from 5:00AM to 8:00PM when school is in session. Students without CharlieCards will pay full fare.

Cards will be "shut off" during the summer vacation and activated again at the beginning of the next school year. During the spring, arrangements will be made for summer school.
Please do not throw away your Student CharlieCard at the end of this school year. You will be able to use it again in September when the next school year begins!
How to use your CharlieCard
- On a bus or Green Line trolley farebox - tap your CharlieCard on the black target and get on board. Your fare will be deducted and our transfer, should you need one, will be stored on your card.
- On a subway fare gate - simply tap your CharlieCard on the black target. The gate will instantly open for you and your fare will be deducted.
- To add value to your card - tap it on the black target at a fare vending machine, follow the directions on the screen, and tap to complete your transaction. Fare vending machines are located at every station and at major bus hubs. For your convenience, you may also add value to your card at pass sales locations. For a complete list, visit mbta.com.

- Recycle your organic waste -- Around 3% of the greenhouse gas emissions through the methane is released by decomposing bio-degradable waste. By recycling organic waste or composting it if you have a garden, you can help eliminate this problem! Just make sure that you compost it properly, so it decomposes with sufficient oxygen, otherwise your compost will cause methane emissions and smell foul.
