Our new Asst. Principal for Academic Affairs, Ms. Linda Barber, is set to continue the good work already in place in the High School establishing a DESE mandated Educational Proficiency Plans (EPP). The purpose of the EPP requirement is to increase the likelihood that students graduating from high school will have the requisite skills needed for success in college and a career, by encouraging and supporting students to take challenging courses that will better prepare them for postsecondary life.
Beginning with the class of 2010, the EPP will be a path to graduation from high school for students scoring between 220 and 238 on the English and Mathematics MCAS Tests. Earlier this summer, the EPP Committee, comprised of Miguel Hernando, Kim Drooker, Elizabeth Libby, John Jarema, Joe Mullaney, and Patrick Schultz, developed the EPP plan.
Educational Proficiency Plans will be instituted this Spring, and will be reviewed and updated over the course of the next two years. For these students to receive a full diploma the courses included in the plan and a common assessment for these courses must be successfully completed. If successfully completed at the conclusion of the student's senior year, the school principal will award a full diploma to the student.
We are now at the stage of developing the Educational Proficiency Plan (EPP) Team. Each member of the EPP Team will be assigned a group of juniors. The school and district will generate an EPP for each student and make the plans available to staff. Members of the EPP team will be required to review the plans, meet briefly with their students three times a year to review their progress, and update the progress information on the EPP. Teachers who volunteer for the EPP team will review and update EPPs, as well as meet with their EPP students. These activities will take place during administrative duty periods.
If you are interested in becoming a member of the EPP team, please contact Linda Barber at (617) 466-5023 or at . We are in the process of putting together a short but informative training that will allow anyone interested to feel competent to carry out the work involved.
