Girls' Track keeps improving!
By Shikeba Shirzay: How did the CHS girls' track team get so strong this year? While most CHS students were probably still in bed Saturday mornings in early spring enjoying the chance to sleep late, we were at the track working hard to make a great season! In fact those Saturday workouts were the hardest of the week because we could rest on Sunday. Our extra time and sweat together helped us to not only improve in our events but also to gel as a team.
Proof that girl's track is doing better than ever is that for the first time we beat PMA! For this season the Red Devils had a record of 8-2-1 and finished third behind Tyngsboro and Greater Lowell. Our team also came in fourth place this season in the League meet.
Success this year really was a team effort. Twenty-five different members of the track team scored in meets, which is better than last year. Girls are expected to set their personal best in their events, and this spring there were eight new school records set and three records tied! Records were made or equaled by the following team members: Iesha Leon in triple jump, 100-meter hurdles, and tied in high jump; Emily Caulfield in discus; Abeo powder in long jump, 200-meters, and tied in the 100-meters; Muska Hussian in 300-meter hurdles; Jemima Barrios in 2-miles; Michelle Lee, Tanya Carrastquillo, Melissa Chenge, Reloden Blien in four by one relay; Michelle Lee tied in 800-meters; and Reloden Blien tied in shot put.
CHS Girls' Track Coach Kim Huffer is looking forward to new athletes joining the team next year. She hopes many of the girls will run cross-country this fall and work out in weight room, which will make the team strong and ready for the season.
"Our goal for next year," said Coach Huffer, "is to win first place in the league meet and be undefeated."
