Luna Eclipse: Chelsea Diablos' Jonathan Luna named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year

By Joe Resnek: Jonathan Luna is a beast. When pitchers on opposing teams are familiar with him, they pitch around him and when they aren't, they get shelled.

Chelsea High's Jonathan Luna named player of the year

He's a beast - he cranks the ball whether there is a man on first, second, third, bases loaded, bases empty, two strikes, one strike, no strike, two balls, three balls, one ball, no balls, good pitchers, bad pitchers, decent pitchers, good teams, excellent teams, stellar teams, horrible teams, teams that try to be good but are bad, teams that try to be good and are awful, even teams that try to be good and are excellent, hot days, cold days, warm days, rainy days, windy days, home games, and away games. Luna's a beast and his teammates can attest to that.

"?Luna's a beast," said sophomore infielder Edward Garcia. His teammate on the other side of the infield, Chris Pazos, shares a similar sentiment. "?That kid beasts it every game," he said of Luna.

Last week when the Commonwealth Conference coaches met to vote on the Player of the Year, Luna won by a large majority - a very small number of coaches voting against him. "?I was shocked anyone would even vote against him," said head coach Titus Manderson. "?That kid's a beast."

And although his head coach may recognize his beastness because of the amount of time he has played for the coach, others who have watched Luna play on just a few occasions share similar sentiments. When asked to describe Luna in one word, Lorenzo Recupero, who only attended one game this year, said, "?Beast."

And although Jonathan Luna separates himself from other players around the league, he is the first to highlight the importance of teamwork and the value of his teammates to the success of the team.

"?One person doesn't win games," said Luna. "?There are eight other people out on the field at the same time. You are only as strong as your weakest," he added. And with arguably the deepest, most productive lineup in the league, it would be tough to pick a ΓΆβ?¬Λ?weakest' on the 2007 Diablos.

And it is for that reason and many more that the Diablos had such a successful season. Because whether it's cold or hot, against a good team or bad one, the Chelsea Diablos' are, as senior captain Jonathan Luna put it, "?Beasts."
