Senior Friday full of bittersweet farewells
By Jessica Gelista: Standing outside for a few minutes in the heat on Friday May 25th was unbearable. But the heat didn't stop students from going out to Field Day to support their class.
As all of us here in CHS know, every year we have the Senior Video in order to commemorate the senior's final year at CHS and Field Day right after. The first thing you could see when going to the auditorium to watch the Senior Video was that it was packed. There was a myriad of people having to stand up in order to watch since there were no seats left. Even if you wanted to leave you would have had to struggle considering there was hardly any breathing room to begin with. Despite the inconvenience of constantly being pushed by random people, it was all worth it. The audience laughed and cheered as seniors appeared on the screen. I have to admit that some parts of the video were a bit corny and a few things were way too prolonged, but there were parts that made you jump off of your seats laughing.
From skits (like the little 007 one) to shout outs to even embarrassing moments (which most involved falling down the stairs) it was all-good. I guess seeing old memories just reminded people that it was probably the last time they'd see most of their friends as they take their own paths. Some seniors were holding back tears as they left the auditorium along with the lower classmen who knew them. Everyone there was busy hugging each other and taking pictures for reminiscing later on. After standing around for a bit and taking pictures, everyone headed outside to begin the field day games.
The first thing everyone did was split up into class groups. Before the games had started each class was yelling and cheering, trying to rile up they're fellows competing in the games. The first game was the human pyramid. Students rushed like crazy trying to finish first. The games started off well for the seniors who won that first challenge. The juniors came in second and after them were the freshmen (to the sophomores' dismay).
The rest of the games (which consisted of a relay race, tug of war, pie eating contest, etc.) pretty much went the same way. The sophomores consistently cheered the loudest and most frequently. Despite that they didn't win much. No one could really wait to eat so as everyone waited to hear the results they lined up to get some food (it was a pretty long wait for most considering everyone was cutting ahead).
As the results came in it was made official that the seniors were the victors for the day. Once hearing this, the seniors cheered triumphantly as their last day in school was probably the best they've had all year. The juniors settled for second place and the freshmen took third. Unfortunately, for the sophomores, they got fourth place and were quite disappointed, as they had hoped to at the very least beat the freshmen. Better luck next year I guess. Once everyone had their fill and had to leave, seniors said their final farewells. There were even more tears this time around. There were so many mixed emotions going on that it finally hit some of the seniors that the school they were so desperate to get out of was what they were going to miss the most. Some seniors didn't even have the heart to go. A friend of mine named Julio Alfaro (a senior and former captain of the track team) is well-known for his strength and self- restrain, yet even he had difficulty saying good-bye.
From how many people went to the senior video and Field Day, it's obvious that the seniors will be greatly missed. From what I saw, a lot of the lower classmen loved the seniors and we all hope that whatever path they take, it's the one they want and that they go on to live very happy lives.
