HMC Makes Government Real
By Stephanie Murcia: On Thursday, February 22 over the winter break, this reporter (along with nineteen other students and three faculty advisors) packed her bags for a four-day trip to Boston. The occasion? Chelsea High School's second year of participation in Harvard Model Congress (HMC).
For those who aren't familiar with HMC, the program allows students from all over the nation to participate in a simulation of how the government of the United States actually works. Students are expected to role-play real representatives and senators, and take part in special programs. This year, students from Chelsea High had the opportunity to be the director of the FBI, framers of the constitution, reporters in the press corps, and even lobbyists. The Boston Sheraton Hotel was the site for the model congress, but students also got to visit Harvard and speak with students there. Over the course of the intense four days CHS students befriended kids from California, New York, Connecticut, and elsewhere.
Whether you were Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts or lobbying to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney, Harvard Model Congress was a great experience for everyone. It was an opportunity not only to learn more about our nation's government, but also to meet kids from all over the country. The experience highlighted the important role human connections play in making government work. It's definitely something you don't want to miss out on and everyone who attended Harvard Model Congress 2007 encourages students at CHS to participate next year.
