Where's the humanity?

By Kirsten Byrnes: So here's something to think about. The other day I was on going to check my email, and whenever I do, this little welcome screen pops up with my horoscope, the weather, and a few news bulletins. Normally I just read the paper if I want to read about the news, but something happened to catch my eye: "Brothers get ten years for cooking puppy." The first thought that came to my mind was, "what the ever living heck?"

Apparently two sickos, both teenagers of ages seventeen and eighteen, decided they would duct tape a three month-old puppy's snout and paws, douse it in paint, and cook it in the oven. Oh, and then for added fun, they brought in little kids to see the dead puppy, and then threatened to kill them if they told anyone. Investigators found scratch marks inside the oven, indicating that the puppy had been alive when it was placed in there. But the two freaks insist that it was dead, as if it makes any difference at all. Uhm, I don't know about you guys but this just screams freaking sick to me. How could anyone do this to a defenseless puppy?

And then I got thinking: how human is humanity? In all actuality, do some of us even act like humans at all? Can the Nazis be considered human after their heinous crimes against the Jewish people? How about Osama Bin Laden? Is he human? And what about those two teens? Can people who commit such ruthless acts of violence be considered human?

I can only wonder where humanity is going to go from here. It bothers and alarms me that people can commit such crimes against one another without a second thought, without a shred of remorse. Those two kids confessed they killed the puppy. But do they really care? Do they understand what they've done?

How human is humanity anymore?
