English
Courses offered through the English Language Arts department are designed to provide students with the tools they need to improve their skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking and thinking. Through exposure to both classical and contemporary literature, as well as expository texts, students learn not only to read for information, but also to appreciate the beauty and power of language.
Writing instruction focuses as much on the process as on the end product, giving students the opportunity to develop their capacity to think critically, organize and convey information, and selfevaluate. Class discussions and cooperative learning are essential components of the classroom experience, helping students develop into well-rounded, effective communicators through both oral and written expression.
A variety of courses meet the needs of students of varying levels of ability and interest. From standard literature courses and basic skills classes to Honors, Advanced Placement, and specialized elective courses, curriculum is founded on the Massachusetts Frameworks standards.
