AP and Honors
Advanced Placement and Honors/Pre-AP Entrance Criteria and Expectations
All of the following criteria and expectations are components of an AP and Honors/Pre-AP readiness evaluation. All of the criteria listed below will be considered before a decision is made to place, or not to place, a student in an AP or Honors/Pre-AP course.
l. Qualifying grades in prerequisite courses
- B or better to move from Honors to Honors or Honors/Pre-AP to AP
- B+ or better to move from Regular to Honors
- A- or better to move from Regular to AP
2. Teacher Recommendations
- 2 for entrance into AP - Recommendation must come from teachers in related and prerequisite subject areas.
- 1 for entrance into Honors- Recommendation must come from teachers in related and prerequisite subject areas.
3. Consideration of scores on relevant assessments
- PSAT
- GRADE
- Quarterly Assessments
- MCAS
4. Qualifying scores and participation on fourth quarter AP pre-work assignments
- AP teachers will assign work during the fourth quarter to students registering for AP courses the following year. Assignments are designed to measure student preparedness to succeed in an AP environment. Assignments will be aligned to requirements for individual AP courses.
- A student may be dropped from AP and Honors courses if he/she does not complete the fourth quarter pre-work to the satisfaction of his/her AP or Honors teachers.
5. Lead teacher and Administrator recommendations
- All AP candidates must be reviewed and approved by Lead teachers.
- Any students requesting 3 or more AP courses/year must receive administrative approval.
- Any student requesting 4 or more Honors courses/year must receive administrative approval.
- ELL Lead teacher will confer with other Lead teachers regarding the placement of ELL students into Honors and/or AP courses.
